About Us

The Friends of Atherton Library is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization whose mission is to promote community support and use of the Atherton Library. Founded in 1967, the organization is operated and managed by an active board of volunteers supported by a large membership base. Its purpose is to increase local participation in library activities, including cultural and educational programs, children’s weekly story time, use of the maker space and computer training facilities and other fun library experiences.

During our first year of operation, as an expanding entrepreneurial board supporting our innovative library and its staff, we were able to increase awareness of the library services and the Friends through community engagement, partnering with the Town of Atherton, the Atherton Police Department and library staff on programs and events.

In 2024, the board members collaborated to increase participation in and support for our library. Friends worked together to plan and implement new cultural and educational programs at the library and to increase the range of library experiences for patrons of all ages.

“In celebration of the joy of literature and exploration” we have donated a bronze sculpture to the library. The unveiling of The Toad took place on June 15th, 2023.
