Our first speaker was the well-known artist, architect, teacher, and art historian Jim Caldwell, who gave a presentation on his art, referencing the beauty of trees, to a standing-room-only crowd.

Our second speaker was locally born and raised, best-selling author Marit Weisenberg, who launched her recent book “This Golden State,” set in and around Atherton. The Friends gave away signed copies of Marit’s latest book.

Both Jim and Marit requested a return visit with new presentations and content for the coming year.

At the beginning of 2025, we had the pleasure to host Russ Bertetta and Rodney Paul. They discussed the Big Five in a presentation that took us on a walk through the musical and artistic memory lanes that defined an era.

This March, tree specialist Jeff Newman and avid gardener Rick DeGolia shared their expert gardening tips with a group of fellow plant enthusiasts. It was a delightful Sunday afternoon filled with insightful conversations, vibrant flowers, and the beauty of trees – all enjoyed in the company of passionate gardeners.

Jim Caldwell, an artist, teacher, art historian, and architect, returned as a speaker to Atherton. This time, he led us through the brilliant and fascinating career of Mary Cassatt, an American painter and printmaker who lived and worked in Paris during the time of the Impressionists. Guests immersed themselves in the world of this prominent artist, gaining insight into her life, work, and lasting impact on the art world.

On May 1st we had the pleasure to host Robert Buelteman, a renowned photographer, who shared his experiences in the Crystal Springs Watershed during the late 80s. Over a decade, Robert captured the beauty and tranquility of this hidden landscape through stunning black-and-white photography, culminating in his acclaimed monograph, The Unseen Peninsula. Robert discussed his journey through this “unseen watershed,” delved into its history, and offered insights into the creative process behind his remarkable work. 

In June, literary fans were treated to an engaging discussion with author Janelle Brown (an Atherton and Woodside native) about her latest novel, “What Kind of Paradise”. This thrilling, in-person author talk was organized by the Atherton Library, with light refreshments provided courtesy of the Friends of the Atherton Library.
